The Buffel Harvest was an hour-long experimental performance in orbit of the noxious, Central Australian weed buffel grass.
According to Alex Vaughn, policy officer at the Arid Land Environment Centre, buffel grass is arguably the biggest invasive species threat to biodiversity across the entire Australian arid zone.
This project was based on a live demonstration of how to grow oyster mushrooms (Pleurotus ostreatususing buffel grass (Cenchrus ciliaris) as a substrate. This demonstration moved through harvest, pasteurisation, inoculation, incubation and finally re-harvesting.
The demonstration at the heart of this project was elaborated on via a two-channel animation film, in addition to the sharing of theoretical text, read aloud by Vaughn, in tandem with a score composed by Luiz Gubeissi and Jon Rose.
